Strawberries
The Withers has been the industry leader in table tops and the use of coir. We grow about 50 acres of strawberries in coir bags or loose in troughs. Coir use is more environmentally friendly than peat, as it is a byproduct of coconut production in South India.
Most of the bags we produce are replanted in the summer to give a second crop in August or September. To this end, our total cropping area is approximately 150 acres, with production of about 1700 tons of strawberries. And using The Withers table top system allows for very easy picking and growing.
Apples
The apples are grown in single rows and intensive 4 or 5 row beds with up to 2000 trees per acre. The soils and south west slopes make the site ideal for Cox & Gala production.
Blueberries
Our skills in substrate growing and perennial bush / tree growing have now been put to use in a new crop, blueberries. We have adopted our own system of pots of coir / peat grown in beds in tunnels and then moved to outdoor production. Growth and early yield production has been very encouraging and the flavour of English blueberries is exceptional.
